Gooseberry Beach is a private beach that is open to the public.
Therefore, anyone may purchase a seasonal parking pass for the beach.
The fee is set each year and in 2008 the fee is $200 for a non-member
for the season from Memorial Day until Labor Day.
(Cash or checks only please).
As for membership, Gooseberry is owned by its stockholders, of which
there are about 400. To obtain a share of stock you must submit a
letter requesting membership and submit a $25 non-refundable application
fee. You must also submit two letters of reference from two current
shareholders. Membership applications can be obtained from the beach
manager during the beach season.
There is a lengthy waiting list, and very few shares become available
each year, as it is normal for family members to pass their shares
onto their children, or grandchildren, etc. In choosing members when
a share does become available, we look for sincere, sustained support
of the beach. In other words, has the applicant been a part of the
beach community in the past? We determine this by how often we see
the applicant at the beach, whether or not s/he has purchased season
parking passes in the past, and has the applicant supported beach
functions, such as the volunteer days to open and close the beach
each year. Because Gooseberry survives on a very strong volunteer
effort of its members, it is important that new members also show
a record of
volunteerism for the beach.
There are no bathhouses available at this time, and there is a long
list of members who have expressed the desire to rent a bathhouse
should one become available.
If you are interested in becoming a member at some point, we suggest
that you purchase a seasonal pass in 2008. This will allow you to
enjoy the beach and be part of our beach community.
